The Creek Dubai
Dubai is known for its skyscrapers, luxurious hotels, wonderful restaurants and bars, beautiful beaches stretching along the Persian Gulf and amazing shopping. Let’s not forget about Dubai Creek!
Most holiday makers book into one of the hotels located along the coastline from Jumeirah down as far as Jebel Ali, enjoy the beach and swimming pools, and may venture out to one of the mega malls for something to eat and some retail therapy.
Unfortunately, many of these tourists miss a side of Dubai that offers a rich cultural experience. The old towns of Bur Dubai and Deira line the old Creek and were built around years of international trade via the sea. They are still a hive of activity today with souks selling clothes, spices, gold, gifts and much more.
Getting to Dubai Creek is easy via public transport or taxi, although we would recommend using the metro during rush hour as the roads tend to get very congested in this area. Jump off at Union Street station on the Deira side and wander down and along the creek towards the sea. You’ll soon come by an Abra station, the most exciting way to view the creek. These small wooden boats, driven by seasoned pros, race down and across the creek providing great views of the buildings and activity along the shore line.
Crossing to the Bur Dubai side you’ll find several souks around the Abra stations and some great restaurants selling Middle East Food. One lovely little Lebanese restaurant, the Bait Al Wakeel, has a decking area built over the water, allowing you to watch the creek life sail by as the sun goes down.
Check out the Abra routes at the stations, and jump onto the Abra over to the spice souk where deals are to be made, especially on luxurious spices like vanilla pods, great to add to ice-cream. If you are adventurous and have a little money to spend, walk a few blocks to the gold souk, where the bright lights and glittering shop fronts may persuade you to part with some cash to buy a gift for your loved one.
